About Us

Nestled along the banks of the river Mula Mutha is the city of Pune which stands as one of the largest and populous cities, embracing the rich social, cultural and historical significance. Yerwada is one of the most densely populated areas in Pune. In February 1952, some of the Jesuits from De Nobili College, Ramwadi, started the Fatima Tamil Primary School in order to educate the Tamil children of the slums of Yerwada. The people comprised of very poor and lower income families who had migrated to Pune from the neighbouring districts as well as from Tamil Nadu in search of work. Fr. Sebastian Mascarenhas, S.J. was responsible for providing a seemingly permanent site for the school and parish by purchasing a plot on the bank of the river Mula Mutha entitled "Aga Khan's out-house". It was eventually occupied by the sacristan and his family. Fr. Sebastian resided in a corner of the barracks. A structure of seven classrooms had been built with the help of diocesan funds.

In 1970, the school was converted to an English medium school. In June 1974, the Jesuits handed over this parish and Fatima High School to the Salesians. Fr. Olivio Miranda was the first Salesian priest in-charge and Bro. Joseph Mascarenhas was the first Salesian principal. The community resided at the Don Bosco Youth Centre at Koregaon Park.

Rector’s Message

Dear Friends, We are at the start of another academic year. Our theme being Empowering Hope, Enriching Futures. We look forward to this year with a hope that will help us achieve our vision and goals. We prepare for the future with determination and zeal. May we all come together as one Salesian family guided by the spirit of Don Bosco our father and founder. I handover the reigns of the school to the new principal, Fr. Glen Fernandes. I along with the students, staff and parents assure him of our full support and cooperation. We welcome him in our midst. We are happy to have him as our principal and I wish him all the best as he takes the school greater heights. As we have completed five decades of our existence here in Yerwada and move on to the next decade, we need to be united and work towards making the school a happy place where students learn to be the caring citizens of the future.

Founder

John Melchior Bosco was born into a family of poor farmers on August 16, 1815 at Becchi, a hamlet near Turin, Italy. He was orphaned of his father at the tender age of two. His mother, Margaret took on the task of bringing up her three children with love, discipline and great courage. She taught them to till the soil and to see God's presence in all things in the beauty of the sky, in the abundant harvest and in the storm which destroyed their vines. A mysterious dream at the age of nine left an indelible stamp on his life. He saw himself amidst scruffy street kids who were fighting and using abusive language. He jumped in to stop the commotion, hitting out wildly with his fists. A majestic personage, who introduced himself as Jesus, stopped him short. He promised to give John a teacher who would show him how to deal with the ragamuffins who, to John's horror, had metamorphosed into ferocious beasts.
